Paul Manafort pleads guilty accepts comply in handle Mueller group

Former Trump project chairman Paul Manafort pleaded guilty in federal court Friday as part of a plea contract that involves cooperation with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and enables him to prevent a second trial.

” I plead guilty,” Manafort, 69, told U.S. District Judge Amy Berman in Washington.

District attorney Andrew Weissmann told the judge that Manafort’s offer consists of a cooperation agreement with district attorneys, who are investigating whether any Trump associates played a role in Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. A defense attorney for Manafort informed Fox News, the offer includes “full cooperation.”

But the president’s group downplayed the significance of Manafort’s plea.

In the Virginia trial, prosecutors stated Manafort concealed income made from political work overseas from the IRS while fraudulently getting millions in bank loans. Manafort had pleaded innocent to all counts.

The prosecution’s star witness, Rick Gates– Manafort’s former service partner who struck a plea deal to work together with the federal government– affirmed throughout the trial that he and Manafort devoted bank and tax fraud together.

Downing, Manafort’s lawyer, suggested after the guilty decision in August that Manafort was open to striking a deal before the 2nd trial.

“He is assessing all of his options at this moment,” Downing stated of Manafort.
